Conserving the Natural Heritage of Assam
Empowering biodiversity through science, conservation, and community action.
A Legacy of Conservation since 2018
Founded in December 2018 at Silapathar Science College in the Dhemaji district, the Orchid Society of Assam (OSA) was born out of an urgent need to respond to the growing loss of natural habitats across Northeast India. Established under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, the organization was created to protect the region’s rich orchid diversity while building a strong connection between academic knowledge, field-based research, and community-driven conservation efforts.
What began as a shared vision among educators, nature enthusiasts, and local collectors has steadily grown into a meaningful movement for environmental stewardship. Over the years, OSA has developed into a dynamic platform where science meets public participation, transforming campuses and surrounding communities into living spaces of learning, conservation, and awareness. Through research, rescue initiatives, education, and collaboration, we continue to work toward securing the future of Assam’s floral heritage for generations to come.
Our Orchidarium & Rescue Center
Our specialized orchidarium and rescue center serves as a germplasm hub for rare and endangered species.
Rescue Center
Acting as a sanctuary for flora displaced by construction, infrastructure development, and forest fires.
Propagation Hub
Utilizing scientific methods to multiply rare species, ensuring they survive for future generations.
Student Training
A living classroom where students gain hands-on nursery management and botanical research skills.
Guided by Purpose, Rooted in Conservation
Our vision, mission, and values shape how we conserve Assam’s native orchids through science, awareness, and community partnership.
Vision
To become a leading force in the conservation of Assam’s native orchid species by fostering harmony between nature and society and inspiring a culture of environmental stewardship through education, research, and community engagement.
Values
- Scientific integrity in conservation and research
- Respect for nature, habitats, and biodiversity
- Community participation and shared responsibility
- Education and awareness for future generations
- Sustainability through long-term ecological action
Mission
- Conserve native orchids in their natural habitats through scientific study and sustainable practices.
- Protect nature and the environment by promoting biodiversity and ecological balance.
- Raise awareness among students and the general public about the importance of wild orchids and their habitats.
- Publish research journals and newsletters to share knowledge, discoveries, and conservation strategies.
- Rescue and regenerate endangered orchid species through fieldwork, documentation, and propagation efforts.
Active Rescue & Field Research
We move beyond reactive preservation. Our members engage in physical rescue missions to extract flora from impending construction zones and areas vulnerable to forest fires.
- Documenting rare species in Poba Reserved Forest
- Annual Orchid Festivals to raise awareness
- Rescue operations in deforestation zones
Rural Economy & Sustainable Livelihoods
We address the root cause of habitat loss by positioning orchid cultivation as a viable alternative for the rural economy. By training local communities in propagation, we transform conservation from a scientific pursuit into a life-sustaining skill set.
Our Foundation, Structure & Location
From its inaugural meeting to its present-day conservation work, the society continues to grow from its academic roots at Silapathar Science College.
Our Details
The inaugural meeting took place at Silapathar Science College, where it was resolved to form a state-level organization dedicated to orchid conservation and environmental awareness. The society’s head office is located within the Silapathar Science College campus, serving as the central hub for all its activities.
To ensure effective governance and execution of its mission, the society formed two key bodies:
Since its inception, the society has actively engaged in:
- Awareness campaigns through workshops, seminars, and orchid festivals
- Educational outreach to students and the general public
- Scientific documentation and conservation efforts for wild orchids and their habitats
The Orchid Society of Assam is officially registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, with Registration No. R/DMJ/241/D/08.
